Doris A. Smith

Doris A. Smith, age 87, formerly of Chanute, passed away Tuesday, July 12, 2016 in Owasso, OK. Doris was born on June 10, 1929 in Bellwood, IL the daughter of Fredrick Harrison and Agnes Mae (Allen) Grove. On March 8, 1947, Doris married Robert Hesting and they had four children together. They moved to Chanute in 1951. In 1963 they divorced. Then on November 8, 1968 she married Wayne J. Smith in Miami, OK. Wayne preceded her in death on February 27, 2000. Doris grew up in the Chicago suburb of Bellwood and graduated from high school there where she was a cheerleader and a member of the swim team. She loved the city life and often talked about taking the Chicago busses around the city. She was a baseball fan who loved the Chicago White Sox and was even a cousin to starting pitcher Orval (Lefty) Grove. She was a homemaker until all the children had started school, then worked as a bookkeeper and secretary and also at the army ammunition plant. She was a Sunday School teacher at the First Assembly of God and Zion Lutheran Church in Chanute, and at Faith Lutheran Church in Owasso, OK. In her spare time Doris loved to swim and sunbathe. Doris is survived by: Sons: Richard Hesting and wife Janet of Owasso, OK Dean Hesting of Chanute, KS Daniel Hesting of Wichita, KS Daughter: Susan Cunningham of Poplar Bluff, MO Step Daughter: Kristy Boaz and husband Charles of Chanute, KS Grandchildren: David Wisdom Ben Wisdom Erica Wisdom Sara Cunningham Crystal Lewis Allison Hesting Pittman and fiance Joseph Kamm Toni Khan and husband Ali Khan Charles Hesting Abigail Hesting and fiance Christopher Woodruff Ryan Rubow and wife Lindsey Step Grandchildren: Chad Boaz and wife Alyssa Kimberly Boaz Brooke Bullimore and husband Jeremy Great Grandchildren: Christina Wisdom Francesca Wisdom Graham Kaine Lewis Laken Lewis Avana Cunningham Blake Brown Landon Bringer Chase Pittman Hunter Pittman Noah Pittman Riley Pittman Kinley Pittman Madison Kamm Zoeya Khan Zain Khan Gabriel Rubow Step Great Grandchildren: Connor Boaz Mason Boaz Adalyn Boaz Finley Bullimore Nora Bullimore Joey Kamm Hannah Kamm Patrick Kamm Step Great-great Grandchildren: Bella Kamm Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wayne; 2 brothers; 2 sisters; and 2 step sisters. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, July 18, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Chanute, KS. A visitation will be held on Monday, July 18, 2016 from 10 a.m. to noon at the church.
