Velma Jean Douglas

Velma Jean Eagle Douglas was born April 7th, 1929, and passed away June 24th, 2024, passed peacefully at home. Velma was the daughter of George and Jannie Smith. Velma attended a little one room country school through the 8th grade and graduated from Fredonia High School in 1946. Velma married Austin Dean Eagle on June 10th, 1946. Together they farmed land Northeast of Fredonia and raised cattle and pigs. Velma always had a large garden and canned everything. Austin was killed in a tornado on June 11th, 1970, just one day after their 24th wedding anniversary. Velma stayed on the farm and then bought the Cozy Café. She then married Frank “Boots” Lawrence Douglas on December 6th, 1975. They bought property on the northside of the square and remodeled it to be Neaby Restaurant and The Northside Taproom. In the early 1980s, they sold the businesses and Velma went to work in the deli at IGA. Velma lived on the farm for 60 plus years and in 2018 because of health reasons she moved to town with her daughter. One of the things that is amazing about Velma is she was on no medication and had never been in the hospital {until June 3rd, 2024} she had all three of her children at home. Velma Enjoyed garage sales and collecting swans and cactus. Velma loved to sew, embroider and cook. Velma is survived by her two daughters, Sharon Thomas and husband Mike Thomas, Linda Taylor and husband Bill Taylor, grandchildren Kenneth Frank Drumm and wife Jessica, Damian Lawrence Eagle and wife Heather, Monte Austin Taylor and wife Sahra, Holly Drumm, Candy Eagle, Skyler Eagle, Gay Adams, twenty great grandchildren, and eight great-great grandchildren. Velma was preceded in death by her parents, George and Jannie Smith, Husbands Austin Dean Eagle, Frank “Boots” Lawrence Douglas, Son Steven Wayne Eagle, and Grandson Brian Taylor. Velma will be missed by many, but she said she had lived a good life and was ready to go see those she missed. Velma’s favorite quote was “I know what I know”. Velma requested that donations go to the Fredonia Pound Pals. A Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday July 2nd, 2024 at Fredonia City Cemetery at 10:00AM.
