John A. Grady

John A. Grady, age 78, of Chanute, our hero, passed away Monday, June 23, 2014 at K.U. Medical Center in Kansas City, KS surrounded by his children. John was born in rural Erie, KS on July 15, 1935, the son of Carl Wesley Grady, Sr. and Cleora (Blackburn) Grady. John graduated in 1953 from Erie High School and attended Neosho County Community College. On January 1, 1956 he married Merle Showalter in Erie, KS. He worked for the County Road Department, owned and operated the Empire Billiards for many years and was known as a pool shark in his day. He also farmed and was an excellent mechanic. He was a 50+ member of the Elks Lodge 806, a Shriner, and recently joined the VFW Men’s Auxiliary. John enjoyed spending time with his family. He was an avid Royals, and Chiefs fan, and enjoyed attending his children’s, grand-children’s and great grandchildren’s sports and activities. He also enjoyed listening to country music, especially Johnny Cash, having a beer with his friends at the VFW and morning coffee with his buddies. He is survived by his children; Marsha Scholz and husband Norm of Roeland Park, KS, Sonya Roseberry and husband Doug of Chanute, Jeff Grady and wife Valerie of Chanute, Brenda Ikehorn and husband Brian of Humboldt, sister; Mary King of Chanute, and brother; Jim Grady and wife Evelyn of Chanute, KS, 10 grandchildren; Erika Gundelfinger, Jessica Segura, Zach Grady, Jayci Chaney, Matt Grady, Andy and Alexis Hosack, Ashley, Anthony, and Aaron Ikehorn, 10 great-grandchildren; Madi and Conner Gundelfinger, Stella, Harper, Nora, and Miguel Segura, Royce, Lawrence and Harrison Chaney, Vinnie Ray, and 3 on the way, and numerous nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his wife; Merle, parents; Carl and Cleora, brother; Jr. Grady, sisters; Doris Strickland and Helen Muninger, and granddaughter, Amber Marie Hosack. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 27, 2014 11:00 a.m., at the First Baptist Church, 118 N. Forest Ave., Chanute, KS. The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 26, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. at Countryside Funeral Home Johnson Chapel. Family suggests memorials to the Elks Ketch Memorial Trust and may be left with or mailed to the funeral home. Countryside Funeral Home Johnson Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
