Janee Michelle Umbarger

Janee Michelle Umbarger, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, daughter and social worker, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at the age of 55. Born June 30, 1969, in Osceola, Iowa, to Edward and Susan (Warner) Adcock, Janee lived a life filled with music, compassion, and unwavering dedication to others. Her early years showcased her musical talent, playing piano, drums, and alto saxophone with such proficiency that she earned a college scholarship for band. A gifted cook, Janee created a warm and welcoming home, a haven of comfort for her family and friends. She attended Altoona Midway High School, later earning her GED, and went on to pursue higher education, achieving an Associate of Art Degree from Neosho County Community College, a Bachelor of Social Work from Pittsburg State University, and a Master of Social Work from Wichita State University. Janee’s life was marked by three marriages: to Steve Joyce, Walter Robertson, and Doug Umbarger. Through it all, her devotion to her "Fabulous 5" children remained steadfast. She is survived by Andrew (Kelli) Joyce of El Dorado, AR; Scott (Melinda Hunt) Robertson of Parsons, KS; Amanda (Tyler) Claibourn of Neodesha, KS; Breann (Eugene) Allen of Iola, KS; and Caitlyn Umbarger of Chanute, KS. Her legacy extends to her cherished grandchildren, where she was affectionately known as “Grandma Nee” : Ella, Karter, and Jase Green; Vada, Tessa, and Blair Claibourn; and River Robertson. Janee possessed a vibrant personality, a sparkling sense of humor, and a heart of gold. She was a friend to all, embracing diversity and extending her love without prejudice. As a counselor at Altoona Midway Schools, she was deeply admired by her students and colleagues, wholeheartedly supporting their academic and personal growth through college prep, scholarship applications, career fairs, and more. She took great pride in being a "Jet." Her professional life was a testament to her compassion, as she served as a social worker, advocating tirelessly for the vulnerable and marginalized – children, families, and individuals facing developmental/physical disabilities, trauma, abuse, mental illness, addiction, foster care challenges, criminal histories, chronic illness, homelessness, and unemployment. Janee's unwavering support and advocacy extended to anyone in need, regardless of their circumstances. Janee is preceded in death by her father, Edward Adcock and stepfather, Jack Chapman. She is survived by her mother, Susan Chapman; sisters, Jaclyn Emo of Shawnee, KS, and Debbie Adcock of Osceola, IA; stepmother, Kathy Adcock. A Celebration of Janee’s Life will be held at Countryside Funeral Home, 420 S. 20th St., Fredonia, KS 66736 on Friday, April 25, 2025 at 11:00 am. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Countryside Funeral Home. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Memorial contributions can be made in Janee’s name to the family to help offset expenses and can be left with the funeral home.
