Harry Eugene Carey

Harry Eugne Carey, 93, Chanute, KS, devoted husband and loving father and grandfather, passed away Thursday, December 7, 2017 at St. Francis hospital in Wichita, KS. Harry was born April 1, 1924 to Frank and Vada Carey in Kiefer, OK. Harry married Betty Ruth Gwillim on March 21, 1943 in Wichita, KS. Together they enjoyed 72 wonderful years of marriage. With much excitement, Harry and Betty both received their high school diplomas in 1985. Harry’s great loves in his life were his God, his wife and his family. Yet, there was another love in his life, football. He played football all through high school and is how he spent most of his time while he was in the Service. Harry joined the Army in 1944 and served two years. As pipelining had been his career since the age of 15, he again continued this career upon discharge from the Army in 1946. Pipelining took him and his family to almost every state in the country. The love Harry had for his family and friends was unconditional. He loved his family very much and was chosen and presented the “Father of the Year” award from his church in 1970. He was hard working and loved working with his hands, making every kind of clock and working outside in the yard. He also enjoyed helping Betty Jo raise a variety of animals on the farm. Harry loved his Heavenly Father and was a strong man of faith. The legacy he leaves is one of a godly husband, father, grandfather and friend. We are deeply saddened to lose the Patriarch of this Family. You were an angel while on this earth and are now spreading your wings in heaven as you watch over your family. He is survived by his daughters and their husbands, Betty Jo and Harry Wheat of Augusta, KS, Annamae Carey of Chanute, KS, and Sharon and Doug Corder of Alva, OK; sons and their wives, Mike and Debbie Carey of Thornton, CO, and Jim and Theresa Carey of Augusta, KS; son-in-law Chester Hufman of Augusta, KS and daughter-in-law Sue Carey of Wray, CO; 27 grandchildren; 69 great grandchildren; and 14 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Vada Carey; wife Betty Ruth Gwillim Carey, daughter and her husband Connie Louise and JR Self, daughter Karen Ruth Hufman, son David Keith Carey; sister Ruth Vaughn; brothers Hurschel Carey and Cecil Carey; and 3 grandchildren. Viewing will be at 12:30pm with service at 2:00pm on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at Healing Center Church of God, 1390 Chanute 35 Pkwy (35th & Plummer), Chanute, KS 66720.
