Carol Sue Hawley

Carol Sue Hawley (Purkeypile); beloved wife, mother, grandmother, devoted family member and friend, passed peacefully on July 14th, 2022, after falling ill. Carol was cared for by her staff at Medicalodge in Pittsburg, while she recovered from a broken leg this past year. Her gentle disposition never faltered and she was often referred to as “sweet”. Carol Sue Hawley, 85, a long-time resident of Fredonia, Kansas was born on August 17th, 1936 in Emporia, Kansas to Harold Purkeypile and Ruth Purkeypile (Morris). Her mother passed away when Carol was a few days old; many aunts and uncles helped raise her until her father remarried Martha Purkeypile (Wilson). Shortly after, she became a big sister when her brother, Gerald, was welcomed into the family. Carol attended schools in Wichita, Kansas and later Eureka, Kansas; from where she graduated. Soon after graduation she made marriage arrangements with Loren Wayne Hawley of Toronto, Kansas, who preceded her in death in March of 2020. On November 21st, 1954 they drove to Coffeyville, Kansas for a simple wedding and began their life together. Carol was a homemaker for many years until her children were older, then she became employed at Fredonia High School in the food service department She worked there for 12 years, to help support her family. Loren and Carol would welcome four children into the world; Brenda Coburn (Randy) of Harrisonville, Missouri, Rick Hawley (Cathy) of Park City, Kansas, Cindy Hawley of Fredonia, and Kathy Young (Paul) of Irrigon, Oregon. Carol loved her children, her grandchildren, and a few great grandchildren. She never missed a graduation! She very much enjoyed time spent with relatives, attending family reunions, and visiting with her numerous cousins. She had a very special bond with many dogs over the years, especially her beloved, Tiki. She also shared a love of horses with Loren and could always pick out the best. Carol was a long-time member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. She remained active in her life traveling whenever and wherever someone would take her. She was always up for a shopping trip, and spent time listening to her gospel music. She could visit with anyone about anything. She loved to share her memories and mischief to all that would listen. Life was good when she had her Pepsi and her TLC shows! The family will hold a Celebration of Life on Friday, July 22nd, 2022 at 10:00am located at the Eureka Seventh Day Adventist Church, 1710 East River Street, Eureka, KS 67045. The service will be streamed via Zoom for those unable to physically attend. A short graveside service will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery, then you're invited to a luncheon for family and friends back at the church.
